Recently I devised another little project. To keep myself amused during math class and also to test the credibility of my opinions, I came up with a scenario.
Hypothetically speaking, if I were in charge of the school board for a day, what would I change?
1.) The only math that shall be taught is practical math. If it cannot be used in the real world, students need not waste their time memorizing it. However, students are free to discuss non-realistic math and speculate on problems such as p vs. np at the discretion of the teacher.
2.) Middle school and high school spectators shall be allowed at high school dances. Homecoming and Turnabout spectators shall be middle school students and Prom spectators shall be any high school students who plan on attending Prom.
3.) If the above rule is too taxing, then all incoming freshmen shall be made aware of the dress code for all dances. "Formal", "semi-formal", and "casual" shall be clearly defined and explained. (This is to make sure everyone knows what to wear and what the expected dress is, which will eliminate all worries of sticking out and over/under dressing.)
4.) Food shall be allowed in most classes, with the exception of Gym. Drinks shall be allowed in all classes. However, "food" shall not be confused with a "meal". If students spill or make a mess, it shall be their responsibility to clean it up. Depending on the circumstance, their food/drink privileges might also be revoked. Drink containers need not be clear (as vodka is clear), however teachers shall reserve the right to inspect and confiscate any drink that they believe to be inappropriate, harmful, or illegal.
5.) All students shall have to take a class that thoroughly explains the following as a graduation requirement: How to write a business letter, resume, and letter of recommendation; how to open and manage a checking account, credit card payments, and insurance payments; how to balance a checkbook, pay taxes, handle major purchases such as automobiles, learn about different mortgage rates, and pay rent.
6.) As a graduation requirement, all students shall be required to run the length of a football field without their heart rate exceeding a certain number or having to stop and catch their breath. The number shall be decided upon by physicians, trainers, and physical education teachers. Exceptions to this rule shall be made under certain circumstances, i. e. if a student has a disorder that prevents their endurance from reaching the required level, then an alternate requirement shall be put into place. (This is to make sure that students are able to care for themselves before they live on their own.)
That's what I've come up with so far. However, I bet a situation will arise in the future that I will think is rather stupid, and another idea will be added to the list.
What's your opinion on these rules?
