Materialism

This is an actual conversation I had with the so-called "popular people" during eighth grade.

Me: Why do you spend $70 for a pair of jeans at Abercrombie when you can get the exact same pair at a thrift store for $5?

Popular girl: (makes a disgusted face) Because they're used.

Me: You could easily wash them.

Popular girl: (keeps making a face) But they're used.

Me: So?

Popular girl: (scoffs, turns, talks to different popular girl)

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

Why does the majority of the teenage population insist on becoming walking billboards? If I had a dime for every teenager I've seen wandering around wearing sunglasses, brand-name everything, and listening to an iPod while texting, I bet I'd be a millionaire.

Brand name lovers, I have a challenge for you.

See if you can defend why you wear the clothes that you wear without using any one of these phrases:

1. "Everyone wears them."
2. "They're Abercrombie, duh!"
3. "Cuz they're cool/hip/awesome/whatever the current teenage slang is."
4. "They're expensive."
5. "I bought them in New York/LA/glamorous city."
6. "They look just like the ones in this magazine."
7. "This survey says guys love them."

One last question: If I handed you a pair of jeans and said they were from Abercrombie, what would you do?
