I'm going to do something a bit different and cover the topic of celebrities. The arguments of "Hollywood vs. hometown" and "why being popular is NOT the most important thing ever" can wait.
During this post, I will name celebrities, their "claim to fame" (what they did to become famous), why I believe people idolize them, and why I do or don't believe they should be idolized.
Name: Miley Cyrus
Claim to fame: "Hannah Montana"
Why I think people idolize her: (Quote) She's a teenager, portrays a typical life on "Hannah Montana", and sings songs that people can relate to. (Unquote)
Should she be idolized: No
Reason: "Hannah Montana" attracts little kids along with teenagers. Little kids do not need to see the star of their favorite show posing topless for "Vanity Fair" magazine or kissing a girl while performing a song. As for teenagers, they read magazines all the time and can be just as impressionable as little kids. Miley stated that she receives a $500 clothing allowance every month. However, she did not state whether or not she works for it. I have not read one article talking about her donating money to charity.
Personal Opinion: I fail to see any musical value in her song "Fly on the Wall".
Name: Katy Perry
Claim to fame: Her songs; in particular, the one entitled "I Kissed A Girl"
Why I think people idolize her: (My opinion) She's a "free spirit", does what she wants, and doesn't let anything stop her.
Should she be idolized: Maybe
Reason: I support doing what you want, but there should be a line drawn somewhere. I would be able to make a more educated decision if I knew why she did some of the things she did. Some of her music has value. For example, "Waking Up in Vegas". I do not believe Hollywood has made her into a stereotypical celebrity. I'm unsure as to whether the music video for "California Gurls" supports living in the fast lane, being a "cheerleader-type" girl, or being imaginative. In my opinion, she is the ultimate "girly girl". I disagree with having blue hair, and she could have conducted herself better on "American Idol".
Conclusion: Do not copy everything she does, but do not ignore her, either.
Name: Beyonce
Claim to fame: (As of late) Her song, entitled "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"
Why I think people idolize her: (My opinion) She's pretty, dresses nicely, sings decently, and conducts herself well.
Should she be idolized: From what I know, Yes
Reason: I have not seen her wearing inappropriate clothing, she (to the best of my knowledge) has left her hair natural, she has donated money to charity, and I have not heard any major scandals involving her. My strongest point is: I only know of her because of her song. If she had not released it, I would never have known she was famous. To me, that's quite a respectable accomplishment.
Final note: I personally believe that 90% of celebrities should not be idolized.
Also, you may have noticed that my posts seem more oriented towards girls. First, I have yet to hear guys complain about the price of shoes. Second, most magazines are targeted towards girls. And third, I doubt guys watch as much TV as girls. If they do, I seriously doubt they watch the same programs as girls.
